From the Verde Valley to the Kitchen: When Wine Finds the Recipe

Leaving Alcantara Vineyards felt like our trip was off to an incredible start, but it was time to check in and settle into our stay. Pulling into Hidden Hills felt quiet, almost mysterious in the best way. It was the kind of place that made you slow down without thinking about it. I was already picturing a glass of wine on the patio, overlooking the vines—just sitting in it for a while. We took a break and reset.

Discovering DA Vines

DA Vines wasn’t on our original radar. It showed up on the map while I was searching wineries nearby—one of those places you don’t plan, but end up finding anyway. Walking into their tasting room felt different right away. Bright. Open. Welcoming. It didn’t feel like a stop. It felt like being invited in.

We sat at the bar and started looking over the menu. I noticed they had food, which immediately caught my attention—and also disappointed me, because we had just eaten. Still, I ordered a flight of whites. Will went with reds, and then came the 11 Sisters. It caught me off guard. Clean, light, crisp—but layered in a way I wasn’t expecting. There was something about it that didn’t just taste good—it made me pause. The kind of wine that doesn’t just sit in the glass—it moves, it shifts, it keeps your attention.

By the time the Picpoul Blanc was poured, my mind had already drifted somewhere else. I could see summer. I could feel the sun. I was in my backyard, floating in the pool with a pineapple mimosa in hand. That’s what these wines were doing. They were creating something...

Wine, Food, and Everything In Between

Somewhere in the middle of our tasting, I learned that their chef incorporates their wines into the food.

That changed everything for me. The conversation shifted. The energy shifted. Inspiration showed up without warning. We started talking about food, about flavor, about what works and what doesn’t. About stepping outside of what you normally order and letting something surprise you. This wasn’t just about tasting wine. It was about what the wine could become. By the time we finished, neither of us could pick a favorite. Every wine had its own feel—its own rhythm. Since we couldn't decide, we took them all home.

When Stories Follow You Home

Their story stuck with me—especially the part about the raccoons. Later, I mentioned it to my mom, and she immediately cut me off. She had been dealing with her own situation involving a family of raccoons—one that hadn’t ended the same way, and one she wasn’t quite ready to talk about yet. It caught me off guard. Same word. Same timing. Different outcomes. It was one of those moments that makes you pause for a second—like something is lining up in a way you didn’t expect. That’s when it started to feel like more than coincidence.

Barrelborn Amish Heirlooms

11 Sisters was the one that stuck with me. Not because it stood out the most—but because I knew exactly where it belonged. It brought me back to that recipe. The one we lost… then somehow found again. With it came everything tied to it—childhood memories, early mornings at the lake, and Rocky—the baby raccoon that used to show up and eat breakfast with us. Simple moments. Nothing about it felt important at the time. But it stayed.

Backyard Bird Flatbread

I didn’t plan this one. I had already opened the bottle of 11 Sisters, poured a glass, and let the ideas come as they would. Pizza had been everywhere during our trip, but I wasn’t looking to recreate anything traditional.

I thought about a BBQ burger we had in Cornville. Then I thought about the sauce I had created with wine. That’s where it started. Wine into the pan. Let it reduce. Let it build. Chicken, flatbread, heat—no overthinking it. It came together fast, and it worked. Better than expected.

Stacked & Sauced Fajitas

This one came from getting it wrong the first time. We ordered takeout—something simple—but it didn’t land the way I expected. I couldn’t decide between tacos or fajitas, and what I got didn’t hit the mark.

So I fixed it. My way. A quick homemade salsa—with 11 Sisters reduced down until it concentrated into something bold. Chicken, braised in wine, layered with flavor. Stacked. Crisped. Sauced. This one had more edge to it, and it delivered.

More Than Just Wine

This trip wasn’t just about wine. It was about paying attention—to what worked, to what surprised me, and to what stayed with me after it was over. Some things you plan. Others show up when you’re ready for them, and sometimes, the right bottle doesn’t just pair with a dish—it finds the recipe. Not every wine builds. Not every combination lands the way you expect it to. Sometimes the wine shifts, and when it does, everything around it either adjusts… or it doesn’t. That’s where things start to shift...
